Show Your Heart Some Love: Preventing Cardiovascular Disease In The Menopause

Many of us believe the greatest risk to our health is breast cancer but women in the UK are actually around twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our risk increases after the menopause when we experience changes to blood vessels, cholesterol, and blood pressure, all of which are risk factors for CVD.

The theme for 2023’s World Menopause Day was cardiovascular disease, and it was also the focus of our free webinar earlier this week: ‘Show Your Heart Some Love: Preventing Cardiovascular Disease In The Menopause’

If you missed it, fear not – you can catch it here:

Some of you may think that’s a slightly strange choice but that’s the point: we often think breast cancer is the greatest risk to our health but women in the UK are actually around twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease (CVD).

In the webinar, dietician Nigel Denby, founder of Harley Street at Home, fitness guru Melanie Berry, co-founder of wellbeing and fitness platform Her Spirit, and My Menopause Centre’s Dr Clare Spencer discussed:

  • why our CVD risk increases post-menopause (cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in women after dementia and Alzheimer’s disease)
  • the signs of CVD in women and how they differ from men
  • how to boost your heart health, from what you eat to the exercise you do
  • the role HRT plays in heart health for women in the menopause transition
  • tips and advice on how to manage existing heart conditions

We had lots of great questions from our audience, so stay tuned to the end to hear our experts’ replies!

You can read more about heart disease here.

At 55 Debbie Beesley had ditched her stressful job, was running her own business and really enjoying life. But then a heart attack changed everything. Here the business owner from Sussex tells her story.
