Sue Makin, Counsellor and Sex Therapist

Sue is an experienced counsellor, sex therapist, CBT (cognitive behavioural therapist) practitioner, mindfulness practitioner, coach and supervisor. She runs a successful private practice in Ilkley and Leeds, also working for Macmillan as a psychosexual therapist, and a supervisor of therapists in Jersey and Alderney. Sue has developed her psychosexual service over the last 20 years, gaining her BSc. in Therapeutic Counselling 27 years ago then qualifying as a sex therapist and couples counsellor. She is an Accredited COSRT psychosexual therapist and Accredited COSRT Supervisor. Sue trained with Tavistock in IAPT Couples Therapy for Depression and is an Accredited Counsellor and Supervisor with BSCPC.

How Sue can help

Sue works with individuals and couples who experience sexual and relationship problems. She has a special interest in perimenopause and menopause, whether due to natural process or triggered by necessary medical intervention, as with some of her post-cancer clients. Her enthusiasm has grown thanks to her clients’ honesty and trust in her.

Clients bring their worries about their changing body, their feelings, thoughts and behaviours that result from the menopause. Clients’ partners can also engage so that couples can explore the transition together, with the aim of enjoying a new, exciting and sensual sexual life.

Sue will help you explore the positive and negative effects of the menopause as a couple, with each of you individually or, if you are not in a relationship, with you individually.

Working alongside the doctors at My Menopause Centre, Sue offers psychosexual support along with cognitive behavioural therapy, recommended in the NICE guidelines to manage both short-term and long-term symptoms of the menopause.

When coaching, Sue uses her energetic and insightful approach to client work, enabling clients to resolve difficulties using their own qualities and strengths. Sue also specialises in running programmes in stress management, mindfulness, emotional management, health and well-being, developing resilience and supervision programmes for Coach Mentoring Ltd.

Sue lives with her partner of 30 years, a GP, and they have two sons (she’s not sure they appreciated their mum being a sex therapist as they were growing up!). They also share their home with their cat, Amber, who they all adore. Sue enjoys walking and is passionate about golf – happy to play in any part of the world. Her friends are a special part of her life.
